The Daily Drill - Effective Interviewing #2
Finishing off last week's discussion on how to improve your ability to find the right person for the job, we now look at the interviewer themselves.
When interviewing a candidate, be sure that you are the person asking the questions, and not the other way around. The more a person talks, the better feeling you will get about whether or not he or she is a good candiate for the job. You only learn when you are listening and you will learn nothing if you are talking about yourself, the company, or the job.
There is a simple formula that you can use in an interview called the "Swan Formula" which comes from executive recruiter John Swan. Based on the letters S-W-A-N, the formula stans for Smart, Work Hard, Ambitious, and Nice.
Look for the candidate to have an achievement or results orientation. Listen for examples in the candidate's answers where they enjoyed and got excited about succeeding and getting results in a previous job. The best predictor of future results is past results, so ask exactly "What did you do and what results did you get?"
Take the next 5 minutes and write down 3 to 5 questions that, knowing what you now know, you would like to ask a candidate for any job when you next interview.
